Profile Pictures is a series of small-scale paintings based on the Facebook profile pictures of my friends. The project originated from a discussion on self and representation in social media. I chose these friends based on how long they had had these images as their profile pictures---how long their social network had been using this image to represent them as a whole person and personality. I printed their profile pictures, painted them on small boards, and scanned them back into a Facebook album, using many layers of mediation--mechanical, interpretive, and painterly--before putting them back into the social media machine.
Three of these friends have since used these painted-then-digitized images of themselves as their new profile pictures on Facebook.
